Ferroalloy refining furnace is a kind of industrial electric furnace and the main equipment for smelting ferroalloys. It is used to further refine the smelted crude ferroalloy to achieve the required composition and performance. This refining furnaces mainly used to convert high-carbon ferroalloys into medium-carbon, low-carbon or micro-carbon ferroalloys, or to remove impurities in ferroalloys, such as silicon.
Ferroalloy electric furnaces are divided into two categories: reduction furnaces and refining furnaces.
- Reduction furnace: also known as submerged arc furnace or ore-heating furnace, which adopts submerged arc operation with electrodes inserted into the charge. The reduction furnace has open, closed (or semi-closed), and the furnace body has various forms such as fixed and rotating.
- Refining furnace: used for desiliconization and refining of ore, high-silicon low-carbon ferroalloy refining products and solvents, so as to obtain medium-carbon, low-carbon, micro-carbon and other ferroalloy products. The capacity of the electric furnace is generally 1500~6000 kVA, and it adopts open fixed or covered tilting form. Today we mainly learn about refining furnace.
Characteristics of Ferroalloy Refining Furnace
- Ferroalloy industrial electric furnace is an important equipment for smelting ferroalloys, and is parallel to the reduction electric furnace (submerged arc furnace).
- It is an electric arc furnace that uses graphite or carbon electrodes. The production process is intermittent and cyclical. Unlike the reduction electric furnace (also known as the submerged arc furnace or submerged arc furnace), the refining furnace focuses more on the refining process and optimizes the composition and quality of the ferroalloy.
- The main function of the refining furnaces is to refine medium-carbon, low-carbon, and micro-carbon ferroalloys, and remove impurities;
- The capacity of the ferroalloy furnace is generally 1500~6000 kVA, and it adopts an open fixed or covered tilting form;
- The ferroalloy industrial electric furnace can be equipped with continuous self-baking electrodes, or graphite or carbon electrodes can be used;
- The refining process methods are diverse, including oxygen blowing decarburization, electric furnace-shaking bag method, vacuum solid decarburization method and hot exchange method;
- For example, the oxygen blowing decarburization method is similar to the steelmaking converter, and decarburization is carried out by blowing in industrial pure oxygen;
- The electric furnace-shaking bag method uses ore and lime flux for desiliconization, such as desiliconizing the silicon-manganese or silicon-chromium intermediate alloy obtained by smelting in the submerged arc furnace in the refining electric furnace;
- The hot exchange method desiliconizes by mixing liquid metal into liquid slag, such as for the refining of ferrochrome.

Ladle refining of refining furnace, also known as off-furnace refining, is a process in which molten steel, after primary refining in a converter or electric furnace, is transferred to a ladle for secondary refining. This process involves deoxidation, desulfurization, composition adjustment, and temperature control.

The submerged arc furnace cover is a functional covering designed specifically for submerged arc furnaces. Its performance directly impacts the furnace's overall operating efficiency, safety, and service life.
In the prior art, two main types of furnace roofs are commonly used in the ferroalloy field: 1. Non-water-cooled, enclosed flat furnace roof with a hanging brick structure; 2. Semi-enclosed, water-cooled, tower-type roof with a tower structure.
