The submerged arc furnace cover is a functional covering designed specifically for submerged arc furnaces. Its performance directly impacts the furnace's overall operating efficiency, safety, and service life.
In the prior art, two main types of furnace roofs are commonly used in the ferroalloy field:
1. Non-water-cooled, enclosed flat furnace roof with a hanging brick structure;
2. Semi-enclosed, water-cooled, tower-type roof with a tower structure.
Non-water-cooled, enclosed flat furnace roofs with a hanging brick structure are primarily used for fully enclosed submerged arc furnaces, while semi-enclosed, water-cooled, tower-type roofs are primarily used for semi-enclosed submerged arc furnaces.
SAF Furnace Covers Structure
The large-diameter, sealed, open-hearth furnace cover features a tower-shaped hanging steel frame connected to the edge of the furnace shell. The open-hearth floor is suspended below the tower-shaped hanging steel frame, and the center cover is connected to the center of the open-hearth floor.
The tower-shaped hanging steel frame consists of inner and outer ring steel beams, with several steel beams spaced circumferentially between them. The inner ends of the steel beams are connected to the inner ring steel beams, and the outer ends are connected to the furnace shell.
The steel beams are tilted, with the axis of each beam forming an angle of 4-6° with the horizontal. The steel beams, along with the inner and outer ring steel beams, form a single, integrated arched structure.
Features & Advantages of Submerged Arc Furnace Cover
Features
1. Optimized High Thermal Conductivity Material: Some new designs utilize a copper furnace cover body. Utilizing copper's high thermal conductivity, this design effectively dissipates heat, maintains uniform heating and cooling across the hot surface of the furnace cover, reduces thermal stress, and extends service life. This design is particularly suitable for applications requiring rapid cooling or experiencing large temperature fluctuations.
2. Cooling system upgrade: Many industrial-grade furnace covers are equipped with cooling channels or water-cooled interlayers, which remove heat through circulating water and improve the cooling effect. For example, the furnace body and furnace roofs of the magnetic material experimental melting furnace are both equipped with water-cooled interlayers, which can effectively control the risk of equipment deformation in high-temperature environments.
3. Balance between lightweight structure & durability: Modern furnace cover design tends to simplify the structure to improve processing efficiency while taking into account wear resistance and corrosion resistance. For example, silicon ramming material or high-aluminum corundum prefabricated parts are used as furnace charge to enhance corrosion resistance.
4. Applicerion: Water-cooled furnace roofs are widely used in high-temperature smelting equipment such as submerged arc furnaces and electric arc furnaces. They are characterized by a forced cooling system and are suitable for long-term continuous operation scenarios.

Advantages
(1) The large-diameter closed flat furnace cover structure is used to minimize the furnace gas reaction space and increase the concentration of recovered CO.
(2) The use of an integral arched steel frame is sufficient to hang the flat furnace cover, which is an important design concept to ensure that the furnace cover does not deform and ensures the sealing performance between the electrode and the furnace cover, and between the feed pipe and the SAF furnace covers.
(3) The use of lightweight refractory fiber blocks greatly reduces the load on the furnace cover, eliminates the water-cooled furnace cover design, reduces the amount of circulating water in the submerged arc furnace, saves energy, and eliminates the safety hazard of furnace cover leakage.
(4) The overall structure of the furnace cover is simple, light in weight, and the cost is lower than that of similar furnace covers.
(5) The furnace roofs has good sealing performance and the operating environment is clean and environmentally friendly.
(6) Maintenance is simple. The lightweight refractory fiber blocks can be replaced on the upper part of the furnace cover. Except for overhaul of the submerged arc furnace, maintenance workers don't need to enter the furnace.
In general, the selection of the submerged arc furnace cover needs to comprehensively consider factors such as operating temperature, cooling requirements, and material durability. With the development of technology, new furnace covers with high-efficiency cooling, long life and easy maintenance are becoming the mainstream trend in the industry.
