A VD/VOD furnace, or vacuum refining furnaces, is used for vacuum refining molten steel, removing harmful gases, carbon, and other substances from the steel to improve its quality.
Features of a VD/VOD Furnaces
The core feature of a vacuum refining furnaces is that it performs smelting in a vacuum environment. By reducing the local partial pressures of various gas components in the molten steel, this allows for efficient degassing (such as hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen), decarburization, and desulfurization, as well as uniform steel composition and temperature, improving steel cleanliness and quality.
It also features fine-tuning of wire feed composition, oxygen blowing to adjust carbon content, an integrated intelligent control system, and various vacuum systems (such as a mechanical vacuum pump system).
Structural Features
The equipment structure of a VOD refining furnace is essentially the same as that of a VD refining furnace.
The main difference is that a VOD vacuum refining furnace incorporates an oxygen lance, its lifting system, and an oxygen supply system above the vacuum enclosure. Oxygen is blown under vacuum to decarburize the molten steel in the ladle. This method achieves decarburization, deoxidation, degassing, desulfurization, and alloying. A VD/VOD ladle refining furnace consists of a vacuum tank or vehicle-mounted tank, a vacuum tank cover, a vacuum loading device, an oxygen blowing device (VOD refining furnace), an electrical automation system, vacuum piping, a dust removal device, and a vacuum pump. Refining furnaces capacities range from 5 to 300 tons. They are primarily used for producing stainless steel, manganese steel, ultra-low carbon alloy steel, and alloys.
Functions of a VD VOD Furnace
As a vacuum refining equipment widely used in high-end steel manufacturing, it provides excellent degassing and deoxidation performance.
- It can produce high-quality low-alloy steel, low-carbon steel, bearing steel, alloy steel structures, stainless steel, mold steel, tool steel, ultra-low carbon steel, and other steel grades with strict requirements on gas, inclusions, and chemical composition in the molten steel.
- Vacuum charging and fine-tuning of alloy composition.
- Vacuum degassing.
- Vacuum oxygen decarburization.
- Bottom argon agitation.
They create a high vacuum environment to efficiently remove hydrogen and nitrogen from molten steel, significantly reducing the content of harmful gases in the finished steel. This is crucial for improving the steel's toughness and ductility.
This process not only significantly improves the inherent quality of the steel but also extends its service life. VD vacuum furnaces are particularly crucial in the manufacture of specialty steel products requiring extreme purity and high performance.
VD furnaces effectively reduce the hydrogen and nitrogen content in steel, remove oxygen through carbon-oxygen reactions, and desulfurize through the thorough reaction of basic top slag with molten steel. Furthermore, they provide uniform composition and temperature.
VD refining furnace, with their exceptional performance in degassing, deoxidation, desulfurization, and composition and temperature homogenization, have become essential core technology in the modern steel industry for improving product quality, optimizing production processes, and meeting market demands for high-end materials.

Ladle refining of refining furnace, also known as off-furnace refining, is a process in which molten steel, after primary refining in a converter or electric furnace, is transferred to a ladle for secondary refining. This process involves deoxidation, desulfurization, composition adjustment, and temperature control.
