As vacuum degassing equipment, VD furnaces are usually combined with ladle refining furnaces to produce various alloy structural steels, high-quality carbon steels and low-alloy high-strength steels.
A top-blown oxygen supply system is added to the VD furnace to form a VOD furnace, which can complete the function of vacuum oxygen blowing and decarburization and is suitable for smelting low-carbon stainless steel.
Compared with the RH vacuum treatment process, the refining intensity of the VD (VOD, VHD or VAD) furnace is strictly limited by the ladle clearance.
Usually, to complete the degassing process of molten steel, the clearance height of the ladle is required to be 600mm; while to carry out the carbon deoxidation process of molten steel, the clearance height of the ladle is required to be 900mm.
To realize the oxygen blowing decarburization process, the clear height of the ladle is required to be 1000~1200mm. Since the intensity of the decarburization reaction of molten steel is strictly limited by the clear height of the ladle.
Therefore, the VD furnace decarburization cycle is longer (generally 40 to 45 minutes), and the entire treatment cycle is 75 to 90 minutes.
In addition, the VD furnace can realize steel slag reaction under vacuum conditions, which is beneficial to desulfurization and deoxidation of the molten pool.
During the VD furnace treatment, the oxygen content in the steel can be reduced from 0.01% to 0.002%; the sulfur content can also be reduced from 0.01% to less than 0.00%, and the average desulfurization rate can reach 84%.
