VD/VOD vacuum refining furnace are mainly used for vacuum refining of molten steel, thereby removing harmful gases (such as oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen) and impurities such as carbon in the steel to improve the quality of the steel.
VOD furnace is similar in structure to VD furnace, but VOD furnaces usually have a decarburization function added, which is particularly suitable for the production of stainless steel or ultra-low carbon alloy steel. They can perform vacuum degassing and provide a variety of functions such as argon blowing stirring, oxygen blowing decarburization, non-vacuum temperature measurement sampling and wire feeding, and can refine various types of steel, including bearing steel, alloy structural steel, etc.
The Role of VD/VOD Vacuum Refining Furnace
VD/VOD refining furnaces are equipment used for molten steel refining, where VD stands for vacuum degassing and VOD stands for vacuum oxygen blowing decarburization. Their main functions are to remove gas from molten steel, reduce the oxygen content in molten steel, and remove impurities and alloying, thereby improving the purity and performance of molten steel.
- The main function of the VD furnace (Vacuum Degassing) is to remove gases from molten steel, especially hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, etc., so as to improve the intrinsic quality of steel and reduce defects such as pores and cracks.
- The VOD refining furnace (Vacuum Oxygen Decarburization) is based on the VD furnace and adds a top-blown oxygen system. It can perform vacuum deoxidation and decarburization. It is mainly used to produce low-carbon steel and low-carbon stainless steel.
Specific functions include:
Vacuum degassing:
The vacuum refining furnace can reduce the content of hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen in molten steel, improve the toughness and ductility of steel, and reduce defects such as pores.
Decarburization:
The carbon content in molten steel is reduced through the reaction of carbon and oxygen under vacuum conditions to meet the carbon content requirements of different steel grades, especially the production of low-carbon steel and ultra-low-carbon stainless steel.
Deoxidation:
Reduce the oxygen content in molten steel, reduce the oxide inclusions in steel, and improve the purity and mechanical properties of steel.
Desulfurization:
By adding desulfurizer and blowing argon to stir, the sulfur in the molten steel is removed to improve the toughness and corrosion resistance of the steel.
Composition & temperature homogenization:
By stirring with argon, the composition and temperature of the molten steel are made more uniform, improving the smelting quality.
Alloying:
By adding alloying elements under vacuum conditions, the composition of the molten steel can be precisely controlled to meet the alloying requirements of different steel grades.
In short, the VD/VOD vacuum refining furnace can significantly improve the purity and performance of the molten steel by removing gas, reducing oxygen content and removing impurities, meeting the quality requirements of different steel grades, and can improve smelting efficiency and reduce production costs.

Ladle refining of refining furnace, also known as off-furnace refining, is a process in which molten steel, after primary refining in a converter or electric furnace, is transferred to a ladle for secondary refining. This process involves deoxidation, desulfurization, composition adjustment, and temperature control.
